What subject matters, styles, art forms, or projects would you like to see in Ithaca?
(A raw list of public responses.)
(A raw list of public responses.)
I'd really like to see something centrally located that highlights the AME church and history of speakers and attendees.
Botanical, mycological, culinary murals
Major sculpture. More intersection repair projects. Street furniture as art - benches, bike racks, bus stops. Painted crosswalks.
Welcoming community, refugees, LGBTQ, etc;
I love little hidden miniature sculptures, painted stairs, textiles like knitted cozies for infrastructure elements, hanging things (we could use shade over the commons), moss art, interactive art kids can climb on or play with, and other unconventional and sometimes more ephemeral things.
Green New Deal. Social and environmental justice.
I have a particular bent towards social justice themes. That said, I maintain that anything goes. Leave it to the artists to freely express themselves.
I would love to see your mirror with the young girls dressed up in different professional outfits. For example, an oversized doctors down, and oversized Firemans outfit, maybe a General Major uniform. Oversized to show the possibilities within the growth of each girl. And it would be great if they could be of brown persuasions. And different ethnic groups.
People with invisible and visible disabilities. No you can't draw chronic pain but you can portray the challenges in other ways. Like spoons. Check out butidontlooksick.com to learn more.
Mandalas, pictures of people. Sacred subjects, funny and irreverent subjects
It would be neat to have a mural dedicated to cycling.
The cross-walk idea.
It would be neat to have something that was interactive in some way. Like, you know that FB video of a screen that showed people's skeletons when they went in?
More abstract. Waterfalls, reminders of where we are and the beauty of all that is arOund us.
Kind of like the new one by Cinemapolis, I really like Islamic art styles, like glass mosaics!
I like exuberant colorful pieces. I would like to see more quality sculptures, large kinetic pieces in prominent locations.
Love the blend we have of hip-hop art - graffiti - natural - whimsical, political. I would say you're already doing it.
perhaps more work by youth
Subtle protest and resistance, speaking to/claiming public memory and space.
Nature designs- the more flowers, trees, and animals incorporated I think makes them better
more surreal stuff
I would enjoy seeing some more abstract expressionism in mural form. I love the new Muslim mural that's coming in, it would also be nice to see some more cultural art being represented to expose the public to their misconceptions and misknowings.
The cornell life for students and cornell history/famous alumni
political pieces
All art forms are welcome. Would love to see more works engaging in political issues and inclusive issues.
I love colorful mosaic and murals that help create the idea that many worlds are possible and that what we think is real is subjective.
My favorites are mosaics and paintings and subjects I like are people, nature, maps, culture, and math.
More sculptures
Breastfeeding and the impact of fast fashion and how consumer based our society is
More interactivity! Stuff at parks. Stuff in corridors. Things that feel integrated into the urban form. Build with playfulness.
Breast Cancer Awareness, Autism Awareness, Enough Abuse
Interactive art - something that is durable that kids can play on or jump on. One idea is a "living couch" where you have a metal base or a structure and cover that with moss/grass, something living, and kids can sit on it, play on it, climb on it. I would like to see some moss art incorporated into ithaca art.
Dynamic. Colorful. Fun. Women. Unexpected. Playful. Engaging. Joyful.
Nature, realistic with illusion (trump l'oil or something like that?), mosque, mosaic, scenes that include faces of people we know and love.
Public seating as art forms, green/environmental themes art projects - including utilizing plantings as the medium like Gaia in the Children's Garden - in our small parks throughout the city, interactive art, public art that incorporates sound like chimes, bells, etc.
Paintings, sculptures. Maybe art incorporated into the architecture of new buildings. Art that builds upon recognizable themes regarding Ithaca and its relationship to the world.
Diversity, community, nature, arts, pride
murals that continue to honor and showcase the many and varied cultural traditions in ithaca, e.g. the native american mural on seneca, the islamic mural in the green street parking garage, the hip-hop murals on the Cornell Printing building
ones which speak to community values, represent community activities and residents, represent the specificity of Ithaca's geological history, or works in color/line/form allowing for broad interpretation
More murals
Portraits of some individuals we may not think of who have touched out community -- not famous people, but just common people. Also it would be good to have some mural that acknowledges the immigrant community in our town -- that is very broad, but that would be good. It would also be cool to have some murals of animals and plants central to our community. Also, something that gets at the rural working class background of many who work in our community.
I love the random bits of public art (like the sidewalk art that's been springing up, and the LOVE signs that float around, the knitting around poles). I love WPA murals and appreciate the history and storytelling that happens.
More immersive pieces would be great. And experiences that highlight urban planning and city issues would be nice to see.
All kinds.
History related murals, landscapes of surrounding areas of interest.
All styles!
A statue of Nate and Kate...they are the best...who else plays four instruments, writes great tunes, entertains the kiddies and adults, produces terrific cds, and juggles seven balls at once? And balances a harmonica holder on his nose while playing The Entertainer on the guitar with walking bass, chords, and melody? Now THAT should be a statue....
Asian and Asian American culture
Fountains and more light art installations like Cosmos on the Johnson Museum.
Pop-up public installations and an annual community wide shared experience of reading and discussing one book, ala: http://www.kpbs.org/one-book/
Big stained glass or blown glass pieces, if they could be kept safe.
leave it up to the artists. variety is good.
Would love to see more nature installations in the style of Andy Goldsworthy....
I really appreciate seeing art from artists with a variety of personal backgrounds. I'm really looking forward to the Muslim Culture mural inside the Green Street parking garage. It's beautiful, but will also be educational, in a way. A window to another place.
More trompe l'oeil. Check out murals in Lyon-- that's my ideal. Whole buildings.
Great Barrington decorates their garbage receptacles.
Again, I like the variety. Historical, highlighting different peoples, diversity, beauty.
Bringing images of Nature and the natural landscape into the city sounds good to me. I love Andy Goldsworthy's work, for instance.
Black Lives Mater, Keep Families Together
A few months ago someone suggested a large statue on the bridge like the one in Seattle. That would be awesome and really bring attention to Ithaca. Large whimsical statues at every entrance into the City would remind people they are entering a neat City.
I think we have a diverse mix already, and I think you should keep that up!
More fantasy
Anything that is a permanent fixture. I would NEVER want to hear anyone sayWhat an eyesore!
animals and nature in the City
I like vivid colors, earth tones, mosaics. That is what I respond to the most, but that is just me. Art is very personal. What moves one person may not impact another at all, and that's okay.
No ideas, but I'm sure your team is looking at what other cities do and can find some good ideas there.
It doesn't really matter what the subject matter is, as long as it is not political, divisive or offensive.
Colorful, political, abstract.
Nature, gardens, agriculture.
I think anything that can involve the community -- especially children -- in its creation/completion is always so valuable to showing how important art is to our community.
More sculptures and possibly light installations.
some representation of queer community and survival. aids/hiv awareness. mental health awareness. recovery (drug and alcohol) pride. in any form, although i wonder what it would be like to have more 3-D/ sculptural representation in random places.
I'd rather be surprised.
art acknowledging the Indigenous history/presence in Ithaca and surrounding areas, nature awareness (local plants animals), sustainable transportation (biking, walking), social justice and revolutionary honoring
Everything but avoid dark, evil impact. Keep positive, uplifting and insprational
celebrations of more cultures eg asian refugees
I think interpretive signage where relevant would be big plus
a large community performance piece
-More art work done on side-walks.
-More artistic bike-racks (but also have them be functional.
-adding gems or unique colored stones into cement that is used for buildings or sidewalks to create a 'mosaic' look for things to sparkle more
community art is great - like the glow dandelions on the waterfront trail - Cleveland has an awesome sidewalk art festival at the art museum - anybody can get a piece of sidewalk (maybe to benefit the museum or maybe free?) - and it's amazing to see what people come up with - we need to encourage all people to express themselves through art in the community
Nature not political Fun and unexpected
I liked the wall art work that came out of the Olympics in Brazil. Very creative with art and message. I like clever use of architecture. I like color. I like something that makes me think or just the shear beauty of the work. Artists such as Dulk, Dface, Smug for example. Real artists would benice even though I also support budding artists/students
Surprise me.
Beautiful, pleasant, colorful... flowers, pleasant patterns, rainbows. I'm old fashioned.
I think subject matters that represent as many different voices/experiences as possible is the way to go.
Pets, books, fantasy.
All things connected with love and compassion.
More pro-immigration and anti-racism statements.
I like the art on the boxes because it feels like "surprise art" I like finding a little bit of beauty or whimsy or a challenge where I don't expect it. Sometimes it's not the big murals that are the most eye catching.
Showcase our diversity in all of its ways.
Local scenes.
That reminds me -- one of my favorite murals is the one at the Varna Community Center playground and also the one inside the Sciencenter downstairs. The artist is the same: Paulina Melechkina. She is amazing!
children's artwork
I like the old library mural a lot - also the mural by AFCU of Ithaca and the lake and the history. Really, I like all the murals.
Animals! People of all shapes, sizes, and colors. People who do not fit into a "box". Science
All forms.
Plants and animals, organic and colorful, murals
Art that showcases the greater Ithaca area Ithaca, its people, its natural beauty, its industry (for example, farming & wineries) our community extends beyond the city limits. As to style, I like having them different, it shows how we have different voices and styles in our city but we are also all united through art.
social justice
I'm not aware of a single LGBTQ themed mural or public art here, despite our high proportion of LGBTQ couples and families (as per US Census data) and long history of supporting LGBTQ rights. We should remedy this!
Landscape views, abstractions, flowers.
More modern, contemporary big art installations. Bigger murals. Creative landscaping would really please me to see.
I like the organically grown, temporary works of community art on a subject. Could these be done on a regular basis and photographed to document the happening?
More stuff about people of color and Indigenous peoples
Everything!
more images of people with disabilities. not just folks using wheelchairs. people with guide dogs, canes, walkers, portable oxygen, using sign language, using a white cane. you get the idea.
Relative murals: Black Lives Matter, Immigration is Beautiful, more Muslim art- work to spread love not fear. Perhaps a mosaic style of all races, cultures, ethnicities either combining into one person or symbolism of WE ARE ALL THE SAME - Spread Love!! People passing by wous be forced to see the oppression and the cure.
Finger lakes Inspired
Commemorative of our local history/businesses
Commemorative of the many types of residents in ithaca
I would love to see more sculptures and larger paintings around.
Views into the Ithaca of past history. Themes around agriculture and the rich wine and fruit region we are situated in. Tile mosaics.Underground Railroad in Ithaca. Lake scenes.
Eye catching, buzz generating, stop-in-your-tracks, unexpected, talk-of-the-town art in any form.
The more variety, the better. I like to be sure that the quality is high -- that is the main criterion.
More art focused on women and people of color.
Social justice heroes, Indigenous art.
nature
Diverse
abstract sculpture, but also how about some installations? something involving lighting or something that is very temporary and ephemeral but would focus an event?
non graffiti type
subject matter: love, self-love, community
A mix, but given the greys and browns that predominate during the cool season, wide use of bright colors would be welcome.
Abstract forms, reflections of the natural world
Thoughtful subjects and styles and high quality art forms that actually distinguish Ithaca from Anywhere USA.
variety
Not sure. I like geometric designs. Less interested in the human form.
Graffiti, modern styles, minimal styles, forced perspective, things that play with size and scale. Like a very large image of a small thing.
Uses of plants and natural materials
I like both murals with people and also abstract murals.
Love, unity, cultural representations, etc. I would love to some humor as well.
I prefer colorful representations, nature, people, whimsical themes....
Something that is artistic but also functional, like the stone chairs at Ithaca Falls.
Just more of it. Would love to see the mural across from Cinemapolis re-done.
Political expression.
Pieces that evoke conversation. Graphic imagery, continued work with under represented populations, video, sound, dance, music, sculpture, work with parks/landscape.
Astrology. Straight lines (see the latest drawings on my instagram..technical looking stuff). Movement projects (groups get together to move in a certain way in a public space).
Perhaps some more graphic styles, More message driven conceptual projects.
More youth oriented murals and cultural expressions.
more art that reflects on the cayugas, and something about harriet tubman on the fall creek waterway
Egyptians Historical fact and or Symbols, Japanese, African Greats King/Queens - Sand Mandala
construction
large scale sculpture, light and music sculpture
Human rights. Local history
Id love to see more honoring of native American history from the region. Maybe some kid art on the walls. More interactive scultures.
Something we don't already have.
For the past several years I thought the rain art would be great – but I think there are people working on it!
Less social commentary.
Nature and diverse culture subject matter
all styles welcome
I especially like the textured murals like the one with the geological formation tiles near Cinemapolis, gives it that little something extra
I'm interested in sculpture and incorporating large 3D elements into murals. Wall reliefs and elements that push mural type boundaries.
I like murals a lot, and one idea would be to incorporate art about local wildlife, to help people connect to our natural world on a local level.
Stronger sculpture, and what can we do beyond the mural? Interactive installation art peices? Are progressive actions art, like the safe injection site or toy lending libraries?
I'd love to see more representations of local history and diverse communities. But also just beauty and nature.
Stories, things that speak to children
I'd love to see a ceramic mosaic mural, huge scale.
Nature, science, community, group murals/installations where many people have a part in the art-- especially youth!
Appreciation of nature, history and collaboration. Some public art along the Waterfront Trail (maybe in place of the crumbling exercise stations).
Attention to art in public buildings as well as outdoors. Linear art concepts that helps draw people from one place to another (Cf. the Sagan Walk, the idea above for Home Dairy Alley/Creekwalk connection, art that might conceptually connect the colleges with downtown, etc.)
Mosaics in the Philly style with some mirror pieces in them
History. A space or spaces where the art changes on a regular basis. Dance? Singing?
Optimistic well-crafted fun and or funny inspiring
Surprising but not disconcerting
I like what has been going on so far.
birds, natural looking flower gardens, water falls
sculpture. also, collaborative things.
natural themes
more art reflecting the history of the area and wildlife
All is good, free expression as long as it is constructive or instructive
We need more historic Ithaca themes for our grand children. All the modern buildings are destroy ing the history of Ithaca.
any and all but some celebrations of diversity would be nice as well
I would like to see more art targeted around the natural beauty of Ithaca. Waterfalls, flowers, trees,
Id love to see a LGBT positive one about pride or inlcusion!
Reuse or decoration of empty storefronts
more art that is not obvious at first.
All kinds. I am partial to street art, recycling found objects, green buildings, and representation.
community policing. cops talking to people, getting out of their cars.
I'd love to see a piece that brings together all the students in Ithaca
Augmented and virtual reality
With regard to subject matters, I find it's still ever important to include art that addresses the diversity of the human spirit as expressed through culture (and history and geography), to compel or maintain social activism and advocacy.
diverse
Social Justice in Food and Labor.
I like the idea of space-relevant art. Something with religious undertones near places of worship, something with political undertones (non-partisan) near political buildings. For example, having the original Ezra Cornell on the library is pure brilliance.
don't know...happy to opine on what you've done thus far however, : )
See comment on style above. More sculpture. Maybe build on some Cayuga or Seneca art themes. I love anything with paleontology or astronomy. I travel all over the world to see rock art (petroglyphs) so of course I like anything even vaguely like those forms.
I don't know- I like variety.
I think art that reflects on Tompkin's County values - welcoming, safe place for all, that demands thought on our issues - race, socio-economic along with art that is just for arts sake are all wecome subjects
Depiction of contemporary Indigenous peoples, any themes that bring balance of flora and fauna to our lives.
a mural of one of the water falls
whatever is closest to the artists' hearts
diversity matters in terms of style and content
Local scenes... historical imagery.. more than Ithaca is gorges
something that reflects what makes Ithaca unique.
I like a variety.
Flora and fauna; historical figures, especially women and people of color; anything humorous/whimsical/quirky
more parking
More public art incorporated into the new construction downtown. Temporary outdoor works (like Christo) in the open spaces on West Hill.
environmental, Asian styles, positive and inspirational
More focuses on people and community versus patterns and designs
I like bold, geometric designs. Also, painted intersections are a great way to slow traffic in residential neighborhoods and can be truly beautiful. I know some neighborhoods of Seattle WA, Arcata CA and other places that have had great success with them.
I like art that reinforces the natural or built environment, Not a fan of anything garish or too abstract. Would love to see more sculptures in our parks, though I understand there are security issues.
more international type of art that reflects the atmosphere of Ithaca
Abstract, landscapes, graffiti-style
More Asian artists. Maybe a Burmese person.
Is it possible to somehow convey a whole world that shows where all the people who live in Ithaca come from?
I like environmentally aware topics. Pittsburgh has beautiful murals all over the city. There I appreciate the cultural, ethnic ones
More conversation-starters, more art to prompt thinking and change.
Big sculptures
Amazing art by amazing talented visual artists. Art should not be only local artists. My taste is subjective as is everyones. I am capable of liking anything, but it has to be well done!
Children/again nature/ flowers/trees things that are happy and calming and show a commitment to diversity and inclusion done in a positive manner
All welcome. Love the diversity
Surprise me. Just apply higher standards of quality. I don't know how public art has been chosen in the past, but there are plenty of people in this town who could make better, more sophisticated choices. (Note: I am not an artist, nor an art critic. I just have excellent taste. ; )
honestly, I love the variety!
Historical time lines or evolutionary stories that portray the history of our community. How about cross sections of the community.
I like plants and animals best.
I love seeing plants, flowers, landscapes, animals.
Botanical, mycological, culinary murals
Major sculpture. More intersection repair projects. Street furniture as art - benches, bike racks, bus stops. Painted crosswalks.
