Northeast Elementary School Murals

About these murals...
In 2021, 2nd grade students at Northeast Elementary expressed desire for murals reflecting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.  Northeast teamed up with Ithaca Murals to have their dreams come true. Eleven professional muralists entered proposals, and Northeast community members voted for designs by Egypt Hagan (Florida) and the 411 Collective (Washington DC).

“FREEDOM TO MOVE" focuses on the human right to migrate and to seek asylum, as enshrined in articles 13 and 14 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Pictured here: 411 Collective members Shani Shih and Gilbert White along with Principal Samantha Little, Associate Principal Julie Humble & Northeast Families!  Students painted the background over the summer.  Shani Shih and Gilbert White painted the foreground September 30 - October 2nd.

411 Collective's sketch for “Freedom to Move"

Borders do not exist in the natural world. Open hands both release and embrace a flutter of butterflies traveling amidst sprawling hills, waterfalls and mountain towns. Waterways and roads connect the landscape. The butterflies move under a rising, hopeful sun. The stylistic abstraction - fragmented colors and shapes embedded into the butterflies and the landscapes - are a symbol of how beautiful, multiple, and complex our journeys with migration can be.

Every year, millions of people must flee and migrate due to state violence and climate crisis, from issues ranging from trafficking, war and occupation, to poverty and displacement. Many of these people face persecution, migrant detention, abuse and deportation. This mural calls for a world where humans too, have the freedom to move, and honors the many indigenous, refugee, and migrant communities, children and families, in Ithaca and beyond, who strive to be free.

Dear artists,
We are a 2nd grade class at Northeast Elementary School.  We would like murals at our school related to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.  We hope these murals will help people learn about human rights.  We hope that you will appreciate this letter and consider making a mural at Northeast School.
From,
