Art and artists are integral to a thriving and human society. As artists we get to reach for connection with everyone, continue to be bold, take risks, stand with others to end every oppression, and make art that reveals the strengths of our experiences, cultures, and liberation struggles.

Art is not neutral. It either upholds or disrupts the status quo, advancing or regressing justice. We are living now inside the imagination of people who thought economic disparity and environmental destruction were acceptable costs for their power. It is our right and responsibility to write ourselves into the future.

All organizing is science fiction. If you are shaping the future, you are a futurist. And visionary fiction is a way to practice the future in our minds, alone and together... Cultivate fiction that explores change as a collective, bottom-up process. Fiction that centers those who are currently marginalized—not to be nice, but because those who survive on the margins tend to be the most experientially innovative—practicing survival-based efficiency, doing the most with the least, an important skill area on a planet whose resources are under assault by less marginalized people. Dr. Cornel West: Art and Culture in Social Movements

You can’t talk about the struggle for human freedom unless you talk about the different dimensions of what it is to be human.  When you’re taking about art, you’re talking about meaning, your talking about love, you’re talking about resistance, you’re talking about imagination, you’re talking about empathy.  All of these are part and parcel to talk about human freedom.  And so art is about those who have the courage to use bits of reality, to get us to see reality in light of a new reality.  So it’s about vision by means of imagination.  It’’s about empathy of looking through this world and seeing the possibility of a new world a better world, a more decent compassionate world, and so being one a painter musician, sculptor, dancer.  In fact, be one a human being who aspires to learn the art of living.  Because In the end that’s what the arts are really about… how do all of us become artists of living - which has to do with courage, love, justice, leaving the world better than we found it.  For me, art is so inseparable from politics.

Art in the end is not just challenging.  It’s not just unsettling.  In the end, it’s inspiring - human beings still yearn for something better.
There is always a cloud of artistic witnesses who can see using their imagination and empathy in the struggle for human liberation.
We all have different gifts.  Sometimes that gifts are one of organizing mobilizing, sometimes that gift is one of speaking, painting, sometimes musician…  We have to be in tune with our own callings, in tune with our own vocation.  What are the gifts that we have that we can give to others in the context of struggle for freedom and justice and make the world a better place.  And that’s a question that only each person can answer for themselves.
