Marie Verga

Hi there! I am currently a student working towards a degree in Art Education. I am studying to be an art teacher with the hopes of invoking justice, awareness, self-love, and activism through art. My goal is to give young people the opportunity to find a sense of freedom and belonging through the act of creating.

High Priestess
Mural of Nina Simone painted by Marie Verga at Southside Community Center in 2018

I was inspired by one of my favorite musical artists and Civil Rights activist, Nina Simone, to create this design. I became fascinated by Nina, her upbringing, and her hand in the Civil Rights Movement over the past few years. Her role in the Movement as well as her personal history is important and honorable.

Coined “The High Priestess of Soul,” I wanted to depict Nina in a strong, bold pose that encapsulated her fearlessness. Alongside this pose is one of my favorite quotes by her: “I'll tell you what freedom is to me. No fear.” In many of her songs as well as in her autobiography, I Put a Spell on You, Nina touched upon the essence of freedom, something she felt was just out of her reach her entire life.

Her fight for justice, equality, and basic human rights is an action that is still relevant and imperative today. I am honored to have illustrated Nina’s message, as well as pay homage to her and her intrepid strive for equality.
