It has been inspiring to have my work exist in a historically Black space. To think about all those who have come before me working, inspiring and building in this community center. Now I am one of those who have left their mark. Growing up around people who did not reflect my outward appearance at all, has led to a long journey of self realization and acceptance which has recently turned into love. Knowing that these places exist, and being able to directly participate and effect this space with my voice has been amazing. I hope to touch the hearts and minds of the young girls that frequent or happen to come across this space. To have a firm image of black female beauty and unity. To show them their beauty exists, their power exists. In these last four months, I’ve gone though quite a shift. In self perception, in thought patterns, in outlook. Working on this painting and having this space, I feel I’ve grown with it and it has grown with me. I’ll miss having this nook to run to, with it, I’ve left pieces of myself. 💜

Thank you to @ithacasouthsidepride for this opportunity and to @ithacamurals for making it happen.
