Yen Ospina

Yen Ospina is a local Ithaca Queer Colombian-American self-taught artist and illustrator depicting her own interpretation of folk and art nouveau. Through earth tone colors, ornamental layouts, and meticulous detail, the work challenges viewers to delve beyond aesthetic allure and allow mysticism to guide their interpretation.  Yen Ospina’s work is influenced by years of exposing herself to antique art (such as Gustav Klimt & Alphonse Mucha), furniture, and literature.  In addition to creating gallery pieces, Yen is an amazing local muralist - as you can see below!

“Seven Of"
Location: Seven Of (Former downstairs of Lot 10)
The owner pulled a card from the deck and got seven of pentacles - The Seven of Pentacles shows you understand the value of putting in time and energy now for longer-term rewards and have a strong desire to invest in sustainable results.

He saw it as good luck in his future endeavors and decided to open the Jazz Club with a few other people.

Mural at the Women's Opportunity Center
Painting this mural in the community room hang-out space is part of renovating the Women's Opportunity Center to be more comfortable, safe, & accessible to women & children of our community... particularly for family members who have hearings, mediation, or court dates at Tompkins County Family Court across the street.

“JUSTICIA"
Location: OAR 910 W. Martin Luther King St. Ithaca, NY
Together we are strong. It’s time for us to rise up for equality, justice, safety, and human dignity!

“We need to keep fighting because there’s so much happening right now - people being murdered in the streets, kids in cages, Colombia... This mural is a reminder to myself & others that art can be powerful. I didn’t get political until painting this mural. Now I’m inspired. I hope everyone feels it when they see it. Keep fighting.”

“KISS"
Location: South Hill Rec Trail, Ithaca, NY

“LADY LIBERTY"
Location: Press Bay Court, Ithaca, NY

During the October-November 2020 Election Season, Ithaca Murals teamed up with Ithaca Hummus to inspire artists to help get out the vote!  In the beginning, we planned for Ithaca Hummus to help fund one or two projects... but in the end, we received 7 great proposals from Ithaca area residents - and Ithaca Hummus funded ALL of the them!

“MOTHER OF KOGI"
Location: Green St Garage, Ithaca, NY
"Mother of Kogi" honors the Indigenous culture of Colombia living in the mountains of Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. This land is a nurturer, protector, and Mother to the Kogi Nation. Because of the support and resources the mountain provides for Kogi, there is no need for them to adapt to a progressing world. In fact, the Sierra Nevada has been described as a miniature planet. Their desire to live in harmony with nature underlies their basic belief in "Aluna", a "generative spiritual force in which all things exist and from which all things take their being". The importance of this culture reflects the respect that we should also have for mother earth.

“Reina Gata"
Location: Down the alley next to Alley Cat Cafe, Ithaca, NY

“GAIA"
Location: Corner of Buffalo & Plain, Ithaca, NY
Gaia is the great mother of all. She is the creator and giver of birth to the earth and all the Universe. The importance of how we treat the Earth is pushed aside by our daily routines. Admiring and respecting our surroundings will help us sustain life on this planet for centuries.
